Fall anniversary getaway, the woods + Ishnala

Okay, some personal rambling for you today and a funny little story! Zac and I celebrated our five-year anniversary in September, which is crazy to me. Despite everything that has happened in these years, I still feel like our wedding just happened. It was so relaxing to escape to the woods of the Dells this year…one of our favorite places to chill and find some peace. I had my film camera along with me, which is where the funny little story comes in. I remembered this place we went as kids that had these amazing teepees and totems at its entrance–Ishnala Supper Club. It is one of the most beautiful locations in the state and truly unique, perched virtually on top of Mirror Lake. (Ishnala means ‘By Itself Alone,’ and it will stay that way.) Seriously, so cool.

So yes, we all know I am a nostalgic junkie and I don’t pretend to hide it, so we had to drive down the looooooong driveway to go walk around Ishnala itself. I thought it was closed for the winter, but we ran into this strangely familiar looking guy. At this point in my life and with the amount of weddings I’ve attended/stared at on my computer for hours on end, most strangers looks familiar to me so I didn’t think anything of it. He was out changing lightbulbs and we talked all about how we came there as kids and we were just out reliving the beauty. He invited us to come have our anniversary dinner on him, and we just kind of laughed, and then we realized…it was Bob the owner, who I remembered seeing from watching the documentary on Wisconsin supper clubs! Haha! And seriously, it was such a kind gesture. And a delicious old-school Wisconsin, dinner-that-would-make-your-Grandpa-proud kind of dinner. More than the food though, the magic of Ishnala is the place. The vibe. The fact that we thought we’d see Don and Betty having a drink at the bar while we were enjoying the sunset on the lake. If you ever get to go there, please do. That is all. Thank you again, Bob. It is a sweet little memory we will always have. :) xoxo

It’s really interesting to watch, especially if you were a kid that grew up going ‘up north’ a lot…which I was! I may not be much of a meat-and-potatoes girl now but I blame my Shirley Temple addiction on going to so many different clubs over the years!
